Why Join Scouting?
Question for you: When was the last time your son ...
 Cooked over an open campfire?
 Saluted the American flag?
 Carved a piece of pine?
 Explored a trail with you
Launched a water rocket he made?
Went camping with you in a tent?
Made your breakfast and did the dishes?
Wore an award on his chest (literally)?
Answer: If he is a Cub Scout in Pack 455, recently!
In 1930, the Boy Scouts of America created a new opportunity called Cub Scouting for boys younger than Boy Scout age. A year-round, home-centered program used by chartered organizations, Cub Scouting emphasizes involvement between boys and their parents, adult leaders, and friends. In the multidimensional plan of the Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouting is where it all begins.
The Purposes of Cub Scouting are:
Character Development
Spiritual Growth
Good Citizenship
Sportsmanship and Fitness
Family Understanding
Respectful Relationships
Personal Achievement
Friendly Service
Fun and Adventure
Preparation for Boy Scouts
Scouting is a game with a purpose!

As Pack 455's families gathered together their belongings to head out to Camp Sol R Crown, so did ominous storm clouds. Hoping for the best everyone headed out into the rain, as the forecast indicated it would pass quickly. Meeting up at the parking lot in a downpour, there appeared to be no reprieve in sight. The parents all agreed that postponing to the following morning would be the best course of action.
Bright and early the following morning, we met at the church parking lot to embark on our adventure. We set up camp quickly and our cooks began making breakfast. Everyone pitched in to get back on schedule for the days events. As soon as breakfast was finished, the boys made an assembly line and washed, rinsed and dried every dish, pot and pan that the camp had used. What an impressive show of teamwork!
Each family then learned how to make a Cardboard Box Oven, and together made one of their own. They then made personal pizza's for lunch which were cooked in their very own oven. Mmmmm Good! After lunch the boys took a nature hike to work on the requirements for the Summer Activity Award. They explored the camp and then had free time to play games and relax.
Dinner was made by the boys, and everyone enjoyed a Hawaiian foil packet. It had ham, carrots, potatoes, onions, sweet peppers, maraschino cherries, brown sugar and butter in it. Each packet was a little feast :-) Then we had a dutch oven dessert cookoff compliments of Howard, Jeff, Scott, and Greg. These dads made desserts that rocked! Each made a different dessert that tantalized the tastebuds. Once dinner cleanup was over, we all relaxed by the campfire and sang songs till bedtime.
The next day we got up, had breakfast, cleaned up and packed up. Everyone pitched in and made checkout a breeze. Way to go scouts! Can't wait till next time!!!

From the Commissioners Corner: (I think this should be used for our camping experiences especially) Roses, Buds, and Thorns has become a popular way for Scouts and Scouters to reflect on a particular event or activity. It youre not familiar with the idea, it goes something like this: You gather your group together and one by one, everyone comments on a rose, a bud, and a thorn for the activity. The rose is something good that happened or something you enjoyed, the bud is something that has the potential to grow into an even better thing, and the thorn is something that was not so great or something that you wished hadnt happened. Its an amazing experience to do this with your unit and listen to some of the great ideas that they come up with in all three areas.
